This Wine Wednesday will be one of the only times I discuss a wine that isn’t available locally, and that’s because it was a special birthday gift I’d been waiting years to open.
I first saw this wine on vacation with my family two years ago in Chincoteague, Virginia. While we were there for the beach, of course my father had to stop into Wine, Cheese and More to explore their selection.
All the bottles were displayed on beautiful wooden racks, with their tops pointed out. In the midst of all the standard-looking bottle tops, one stood out to me. It was a black heart on a pretty pastel pink background with a dagger running through it. I took the bottle out and began to laugh. It was seriously named “Bitch.”
I immediately ran over to my dad who was looking at much more mature sounding wines and asked if he’d be interested in it, knowing I just wanted to take this cool bottle home. He laughed, too, and said he’d buy it for me, but I would have to wait until my twenty-first birthday to drink it.
“Bitch, huh? Perfect,” he said. “That’s what you’ll do until you’re able to drink it.”
Aaaand, he was right. I saw that wine perched on one of my father’s wine racks for two. Whole. Years. Despite the fact that I had become much more versed in the world of wine since that day, I couldn’t wait to drink this $16 white wine that had literally no online presence.
Seriously. The back of the bottle simply labeled it as “white wine,” which I’m assuming means it’s some sort of a blend. It did have an official label stating it comes from the Castilla and Léon region of Spain, however.
The Castilla and Léon region are mostly known for making reds, with Tempranillos being their most popular. Their white varietals aren’t anything to shake your head at though, as this region has been producing all sorts of wine for over 2000 years.
During the last century, there was a shift towards planting less and focusing on quality over quantity, so I had confidence that this wine would live up to my expectations.
It was at the end of the day on my birthday, just two weeks ago, that I finally got to have my birthday wine. I had been chilling it in the fridge for a day, so it was nice and cold. My boyfriend poured out a taste for me, and I took that long awaited sip.
It was immediately so much more crisp than I imagined it would be, with a really mellow finish. Notable flavors I tasted included apple, citrus fruits and an underlying hint of nutmeg.
I’m not a huge white wine fan, but I could not be more content with my Bitch wine. It lived up to all my dreams of being my first 21-year-old wine and will be a memory -and now keepsake, cute bottle!- that I will cherish forever.
Love this story! Great read! Happy 21st birthday wishes again my Annie Girl!
Love you much,
Auntie Deb
