I don’t know about you, but right now I’m hungrier than I’ve ever been. Something about being in my house all day just makes me want to snack more!
The recipe I’m sharing today will conquer all your quarantine cravings. It’s a little sweet, a little salty, an endless combination of toppings and it’s only three ingredients.
I’ve actually been whipping this stuff up for years, no joke. It’s a recipe I saw on Food Network that I made for a wine tasting party my parents had when I was 14. Here’s a photo I posted of my first attempt with it on Instagram in 2013:
Since then it’s been one of my go-to simple appetizers that is as easy as it is delicious, and I’m sure you’ll agree after making it yourself.
Here’s what you’ll need: Butter, bread and pure maple syrup. Seriously, that’s it.
I do recommend using a sturdier bread like sourdough, which is what I always prepare mine with. Using 100% pure maple syrup is a major key as well, it cooks off beautifully and gives the bread a natural maple flavor. If you’re feeling ambitious, trying making your own! Mine comes from my brother’s maple tree in my backyard.
Let’s get down to the cooking.
Step one: Heat a large pan over medium heat. Spray a plate with some cooking spray and leave off to the side, this is where the bread will go once it’s cooked.
Step two: Melt a large pat of butter in the pan, about 1-2 tbs.
Step three: Add a 1/4 cup of maple syrup to the pan once the butter has melted, then plot in four to five slices of your bread. The slices should be the width of a baguette, so cut yours in half if you’re working with a loaf as big as mine.
Step four: Flip the bread immediately using some tongs or a spatula so both sides are coated in the syrup. Then cook for about five minutes, flipping them often, until they turn a beautiful golden brown.
Step five: Transfer to your greased plate (so the sugary bread won’t stick) and let cool for a couple minutes. You’re all done!
The maple bread alone is a great snack, but I usually top mine with some soft cheese. I used some brie but camembert or a blue stilton would be delicious, too.
You could also forgo the savory and add some sweet toppings! I sprinkled some powdered sugar on my sweet rendition but whipped cream, fresh fruit or honey would be great as well!
As for drink pairings I personally would enjoy this snack with a dry, oaky red wine or a dark stout.
Let me know in the comments if you’ll be trying this out! As for now, I’ll just sitting over here finishing this plate of bread, and maybe even cooking up the rest of the loaf in syrup if I get hungry enough.
It was delicious with the soft Brie cheese. The salt and sweet of the maple bread was perfectly balanced with the creamy cheese! I also tried it with blue cheese and that was sooo yummy ?
This looks and sounds like a delicious addition to Easter morning breakfast!
