Coming from an Italian family, I’ve learned that food is more than just a luxury, it is a symbol of love and connections. Every Sunday is devoted to coming together as a family and eating our signature meal, yep you guessed it… Sunday sauce. Unlike a normal family, we do not just eat spaghetti sauce you can buy from the store..we make it ourselves! Every year in September, my grandma buys about 40 bushels of tomatoes and in a three day process we come together to make homemade tomato sauce.
To paint you a picture, we wake up at 7am (which may be the hardest part about the whole thing) and meet in my grandma’s garage to wash each tomato one by one and cut them. Day two is when we convert the cut up tomatoes into tomato puree, followed by cooking and jarring the sauce. Finally on the third day, we make sure each jar is sealed properly so we can bring them down to the basement to store (yes we have a huge wall in the basement just for jarred sauce).
Canning tomatoes is one of the many traditions my family has and has been going on for generations, which makes it so special. No matter how loud, crazy and sometimes annoying they can be.. my family are the most important people in my life.
