Working at a Music Store During a Global Pandemic
Since the pandemic began, small businesses have been affected in many ways – most notably by having to close for such an extensive period of time. A lot of locally owned music-stores have felt the effects of this as well – and by having the opportunity to work at Chautauqua Music (a locally owned music store/guitar shop in Jamestown, NY), I’ve been able to get a firsthand look at it all. Given that I was a music major for a short period in my life, I have a little insight into how the class structure works. The intense course load, studio performances / lessons, and ensembles are not unfamiliar to me – except for the fact that my time as a music major was not spent in the midst of a global pandemic. Small, local artists are often the backbone of close-knit communities – the SUNY Fredonia Campus being one of them. In a year in which everything has been shut down – no performance opportunities in sight – local creators are attempting to branch out – in more ways than one.
