What are chickens? Can you define what a chicken actually is?

Overall, a chicken is a bird. A bird that has a red comb on their head and two red wattles that hang right below their chin.  These characteristics are more dominant in male chickens but you will see some female hens do to have large combs or wattles as well. The comb and wattles do not usually form until the chicken has reached a growth spirt.

A family owned chicken or a “domestic” one has close to no ability to fly, especially if they are a thicker, heavier bird, versus if the bird was lighter and smaller. Chickens have hollow bones that allow them to fly around. This helps reduce their weight and supply them with oxygen.

There are 2 types of bones that chickens have to serve numerous purposes. Medullary and Pneumatic bones:

Medullary Bones: Include the shoulder blades, ribs

and legs. This helps storing calcium. Calcium in Hens that lay eggs is super important! It helps produce a strong eggshell.

Pneumatic Bones: Include the pelvis, lower back and collar bone. These parts are considered hollow. Allowing the chickens to take flight.

In some reality or another, people think about what came first. The chicken or the egg? But in logical terms, chickens are rather “hatched” then born. So, if that helps you guys in any way to come to a conclusion then you’re welcome :).

When you’re looking at different chickens, you notice their magnificent coloring, combs and wattles, BUT do you ever notice their beak? How small and pointy it is? Well, guess what! Chickens have no teeth inside of their tiny beak. Most chicken owners do not feed specific foods to their chickens because of the minerals inside that could possibly cause harm.

Most chickens have a long lifespans, some longer than others if their kept as pets. Some chickens live around 10 to 15 years old! Others may be cut out shortly over a year if the owner sees no purpose for them after the hens start laying.
