Happy Friday Everyone!
This week’s featured technique is needle felting!
Needle-felting is defined in this Wikipedia Article, it involves taking colorful wool and specially designed needles to sculpt or embellish items.
I’ve seen needle felting occasionally on my feed, usually of people creating little needle-felted dolls or sculptures. The process involves a lot of repetitiveness and patience.
It takes a lot of layers to create a 3-D object with wool fibers. The more you push the wool into itself in order to make the piece more solid, the more layers needed.
Making the details on top of the base layer can be even more difficult, since it still takes a surprisingly larger amount of wool than expected to create a small detail.
Needle felting is an art form not only for creating little sculptures, but it can also be decorations on clothing or other useful items such as bags. I enjoy this, that the medium is not only artistic, but practical.
Here are few artists that specialize in needle-felting, I advise you to check them out in order to get a better understanding of this medium. Unfortunately I don’t know too much about it, but I’ve enjoyed seeing the creators I’ve found.
I found all of these examples simply by looking up “needle felting” in Instagram’s search bar, and these were the artists that caught my attention the most.
Again, you should check them out yourself, and if you ever see me post about a certain technique you find interesting, I would also advise you to look it up too.
Finally, finding new mediums is hard. That’s why I’m hoping that the ones I find are inspiring to you. Let me know which of the techniques I’ve featured thus far you enjoy the most, I’d love some feedback.
Spring break is next week, and I’ll be traveling to Missouri, so we’ll see if I get around to posting.
Have a great weekend Y’all!
