Happy Friday Everyone!
This week I bring to you an artist that I have personally met before, and fell immediately in love with her work. Her name is Sara Hopkins, and she’s an illustrator.
I own a few prints of her work, and they hang on the wall of my desk so I can look at them whenever I want to (which happens to be often when I’m avoiding my work).
She’s based in Upstate New York, and attends a bunch of local comic-cons selling her work. This is where I had the pleasure of meeting her, as I am an Upstate New York local myself.
Sara began drawing and getting more into art in high school, she says it is her therapy and absolute joy to create. Making sure to set aside time every night for tea and sketching in order to keep her skills sharp.
Another reason she is motivated to draw is because she finds it therapeutical, saying “I get excited every time I start a new drawing, but also like to work slowly and take my time with each one and let the characters come to life.”
Furthermore, I asked Sara what inspires her and she told me that she takes a lot of inspiration from other artists and illustrators. She has made friends in the community both at conventions and online. Saying that those spaces create motivation and excitability for her.
By day, Sara is a Librarian. She also finds her inspiration by the books she sees and reads.
Her work is clearly influenced by nature and it has a very cottage-core aesthetic. I really love her little skeleton or ghost-ie figures and seeing the different ways she draws them. They have a certain whimsical feeling to them that just makes my little alt heart happy.
I highly recommend checking out Sara’s Instagram. She’s created illustrations for prints, stickers, and even some 3D printed models of the character she creates.
There are hundreds of designs and illustrations that Sara has created. This makes it nearly impossible for me to even begin to show you all her wonderful work.
Her illustrations has personally brought joy into my life, and that’s part of the reason why I’m sharing her work with you all.
Furthermore, Sara’s work was unique enough for me to distinguish it from all the other illustrators out there. I find that it is a rare thing to do nowadays, with the artistic world quite literally at our fingertips. Illustrating in itself is not a unique technique, but the way that Sara uses her skills is.
Plus, they just make me happy. Art is a lot about creating joy, and I still find little details in her work that make me smile while I’m staring off into space at them.
Thanks for stopping by and don’t forget to like our Instagram and our Facebook pages!
