Miley Struts Her Stuff

Miley Cyrus shocked the world with her sudden public transformation from Disney starlet to daring public figure.

The star publicly began to rebel against her reputation as a clean-cut child star. This began with her chopping all her hair off and speaking her mind on social media. This attention brought her media attention that overpowered her former persona and replaced it with her updated persona.

This change did not stop there; The music that was coming from Miley also drastically changed. She went from cookie cutter pop music to R&B and rap influenced music produced by famous hip hop producer called Mike Will Made It.

The attention that was brought from her debut single from this era, “We Can’t Stop”, brought worldwide press and promotion for her new album that was coming out in the future.

This album anticipation grew even larger with the release of her song “Wrecking Ball” which hit number one in multiple countries around the world. This music video also brought a naked Miley Cyrus on a wrecking ball knocking into walls.

This than led to the release of the album, called Bangerz, released to high anticipation and expectations. The album led to mixed reviews, with some praising Miley’s new musical path while others criticized the blatant use of Black culture, which some felt was cultural appropriation within the music and hair styles she used in the promotion.

This all came to controversy when Miley was asked to perform at the VMA awards. This issue came when Miley walked out to perform her song “We Can’t Stop” in a skin-colored bikini. This made many think that she was completely naked due to the color of the bikini. She proceeded to sing and dance provocatively, using a foam finger to perform fake sexual acts on herself.

This is when Robin Thicke walked out to perform his hit “Blurred Lines” with her on stage. While he was performing, Miley walked up in front of him and bent over. She began twerking on Robin, which shocked the audience. They continued to sing the song while faking sexual acts until the performance was over.

This was the talk of the media for weeks. All they could talk about was the controversial Miley performance and how shocking it was to be aired on MTV prime time.

Whether you were a fan or not of the performance, it spread throughout pop culture and made an impact on how we view the line of being too or not.
