The Truth About Thunderstorms

While thunderstorms can be cool, there are some do’s and don’ts that you may or not know.

While thunder was thought to be due to the anger of the gods, it is now known to be caused by lightning.

In simple terms, lightning is very hot. It can be almost five times hotter than the surface of the sun. Because of this, when it cuts through the air the heat causes the air to expand rapidly, then cool just as quickly as the lighting leaves the vicinity.

This rapid temperature and expansion change causes the loud rumbling noise that we know as thunder. Lightning is a stream of electrons caused by the negatively energized cold air reacting to the positively energized warm air within the cloud. Lightning is the result of this charge build-up.

So what should you do during a lightning storm? The most basic tip is to avoid standing outside or underneath or near anything that could be a conductor such as a metal pole or a tall tree. Standing near anything like this might cause the lightning to travel through the object and make contact with you.

Unplugging electronics is both for your safety and the safety of the object itself. Just like with the tree, the current could end up traveling through the wire and overloading your systems causing them to fry or in some cases catch on fire.

Showering during a lightning storm is also not recommended, as a lightning strike could travel through the pipes and shock you.

Concrete surfaces can also be dangerous as they often contain metal piping that is reachable by lightning.

It may seem wise to go to high ground when the rain is starting to become overwhelming, but as we discussed previously, lightning reaches higher objects first, so finding a low place to hang out can help you avoid getting shocked.

If you are ever caught out in the open during a lightning storm it’s better to separate from the group in the hopes that if lightning were to strike the ground there is a better chance that everyone will not be injured and be available to help or call someone.

If someone is struck by lightning, ensure that you act quickly and effectively. If you can call for help, then attend to the individual. Since it is a huge electric shock it is common for lightning to have caused a heart attack. Check if the person is breathing and administer CPR as necessary.
