Hi everyone, and welcome back to Tasting My Heritage. As promised from my last post where I made Pakistani eggs (if you haven’t seen that post please go check it out), I am going to show you today how to make Chai the “Pakistani” way.
Chai is a go to drink in Pakistan. This drink is had any time during the day or night. It has caffeine in it and it’s a tea but the texture is sort of similar to coffee.
It’s really easy to make and it’s been my favorite drink since childhood.
Ingredients:
- Milk (Whole milk is preferred)
- Tapal Danedar loose black tea
- Sugar (I like using brown sugar but feel free to use whatever sweetener you’d like)
- Cardamom seeds
- Water (this is optional if you don’t want your tea as thick but I like mine without it)
*Please note* You will need a small strainer that fits over your mug for this recipe
Step 1: Pour your milk into your mug. From there, pour that into your pot. This will help you portion out the correct amount of tea that you’d like.
Step 2: Put your stove at medium/high heat and begin stirring your milk. It’s very important to use a spoon and scrape the bottom on your pot while mixing so that none of your milk sticks to the bottom.
Step 3: After a couple of minutes, you can add a spoonful of the Tapal Danedar black tea (Use a spoonful per cup of tea that you are trying to make).
Step 4: Continue to mix in the same way until your tea comes to a boil. When that happens you’ll want to turn your heat down and keep mixing.
Step 5: From there, you can add your sugar to your liking.
Step 6: Add your cardamom seeds. I add 3 per cup of tea. You’ll want to break the shell and pour the insides out and then add the shell as well. This strengthens the flavor and aroma of the tea.
Step 7: Once you add your sugar and cardamom seeds, raise the heat of your stove and let it boil again. Please note that you should continue to be mixing throughout this entire process.
Step 8: Once your tea has boiled for a second time, it is ready.
Step 9: Put your mug down and put the strainer over it. Pour your tea from the pot onto the strainer and into the cup. This will strain any of the excess loose black tea.
Step 10: Enjoy your tea!
