God, It’s Brutal out Here
Hi, welcome to my second blog post! This week I will be talking about the album SOUR by Olivia Rodrigo that was released back in May of 2021.
Before getting into the album, let’s talk about where Olivia Rodrigo got her start and how she got here now. Olivia Rodrigo grew up in California and got her start as an actress on a popular kids show, Bizaardvark. When she was 12, she was cast as Paige Olvera and was in that role for about four years. When she was 15, she landed a role as Nini Salazar-Roberts on the popular show “High School Musical: The Musical: The series.” The show grew a huge audience and is now working on its third season. During the show, the writers asked her to write songs for it. This is what would eventually kick off her music career. She eventually released her first single, “Drivers License”, in January of 2021.
As mentioned before, Rodrigo release her debut album SOUR in May of 2021. She released three singles in January (Drivers License), April (Deja Vu), and May(good 4 u) right before her album and it got fans very excited for what was to come. She released the track-list for the album in April, just a little over a month before releasing it. I have included a picture of the setlist for those of you who may not know the album too well!
Right after the album was released, people were instantly talking about it. On Instagram, Tik Tok, Twitter, Youtube, etc. It was everywhere. In an article by Pitchfork magazine, they say this about the album “The matter of failed romance is central to Sour, a nimble and lightly chaotic grab bag of breakup tunes, filled with both melancholy and mischief.” In this article they had all good things to say about how well her album goes through the stages of her life and a breakup. Rolling Stones headlines their article on this album as “Olivia Rodrigo Is a Revelatory New Pop Voice on ‘Sour.’ Deal With It: On her debut album, the singer wields the breakup angst and intimacy of “Drivers License” like a glittery dagger” For Rolling Stone to say something this big about someones debut album is very important and impressive for Olivia Rodrigo. They rave about how spunky her album is while also giving us the sadness of what it feels like to go through a breakup. This album is nearly a year old but it has already won some awards! Here is a list of awards she has won since she first released drivers license.
Album of the Year: People’s Choice Awards 2021
Album of the Year: Apple Music Awards 2021.
She is also currently up for two Grammys this year for album of the year and best vocal pop album.
In my personal opinion, I think this was a great album! I am a big fan of Olivia Rodrigo and was anticipating her album from when she first released drivers license. When this album came out I had it on repeat. She does such a good job of making you feel the emotions of a young heartbreak even if you have never gone through a breakup.
Thank you for reading, and stay tuned for my next post!
I didn’t know she was in High School Musical: the musical!!! Exciting!
My housemates absolutely LOVE this album! I’ll have to show them your blog!
