Album reviews

Free Spirit

Hey everyone! Welcome back to this week’s blog post. This week, we will be talking about the album Free Spirit by Khalid. Hope you all enjoy!

So before we start talking too much about the album, let’s talk about the artist. Khalid is still a relatively new artist but is already doing so well. He is from For Stewart, Georgia but has also lived in Kentucky and New York. Eventually he moved to El Paso, Texas where he lived most of his life and he says that he feels like that is home for him. With this being said, that is where is first single comes from. He released the song “Location” in 2016. This song hit the charts quick. He released his first album “American Teen” in 2017. This album came to be one of the biggest debut albums of the late 2010s. His next album, “Free Spirit”, was released in 2019. While there was almost a four year period between these two albums, he was featured in other songs during that time. Some of those being the song “”1-800-237-8255,” with Logic, “Love Lies” with Normani, and “Eastside” with Benny Blanco. These were all hit songs that wherein the charts. He returned to music again in 2021 to release the mixtape “Scenic Drive (The Tape.)” He released a single just this past month and has new songs and album coming out very soon. His music has always been known to be down to earth and mellow which is why people like it so much.

Let’s get into the album.

Let’s get into the album now! It has 17 tracks and each song is just as good as the last. Here is the track list before getting into the album reviews.

Track-List

This album was released in April of 2019. This song quickly hit the charts and became the album of the summer. When it was released, people loved it right away. Fans and people on social media had a lot of good things to say but music critics were indifferent. Let’s get into some of the reviews posted about this album. The album had good reviews but there were a couple mixed opinions on it as well. An article that had very conflicting thoughts came from Rolling Stone. The headline of the article is “An R&B innovator wonders what it all means on the follow-up to his great debut” Khalid released a fantastic first album that people streamed constantly and still has songs that will appear on the charts or are still making records. People were expecting a lot from his sophomore album and not all of the critics believed it lived up to the expectations. In this article, the author touches a lot on how the lyrics were very melancholy and a were self reflective but not all in the best way. They feel as thought some of the songs late in the album have a more upbeat tone to them and those are the tracks they liked more. Overall, they think that in the future he should work more on lyrics and having more variety between his songs.

Personally, I love this album. It came out during my senior year of high school and all of my friends and I listened to it when it came out and would have it playing constantly. It does have some songs that have more of a sad tone but there is also just enough upbeat songs that make it a great album. It was all I listened to when I went on vacation and over the summer. It is an album I always go back to as soon as it starts to get nice out. It was always be one of my favorite albums.
