Hey everyone! Welcome to this weeks post! We are going to discuss the hit new single, As It Was by Harry Styles.

Since I have already done a post about one of his albums, I won’t go too in depth about his background. He originally started in a band, One Direction, in 2010. The band split up in 2015 after five years. Harry started releasing his own music and now has two albums out and one on the way that will be released next Friday.

Back in late March, Styles announced that he would be releasing a new album titled “Harry’s House” on May 20th. Almost a week later, he made a post stating that his new single, “As It Was” would be released on April 1st. This is the first and so far only single he has released from this new album and it broke some records in a short period of time. Let’s get into the reviews of the single and the records it broke!

The first review comes from The Guardian. The sub headline of this article reads “Many will pore over the gossipy, self-referential lyrics, but Styles’s song is for everyone: an effervescent, high-tempo hit to have you clicking your heels.” The author gave the song an overall rating of 5/5 stars. The article talks about how the tempo of the song being so upbeat is what helps make it so good and catchy to listen to. They also point out that the lyrics are a good representation of personal storytelling rather than “blustery metaphor.” Although there was some mixed reviews, this article calls this one of his best songs. The next article comes from Rolling Stone. They say that As It Was is “nakedly vulnerable and unlike anything he’s done before” They talk about how the lyrics of this song are very emotionally powerful. They acknowledge the fact that although the lyrics are very emotional, the song is up-beat and makes you want to dance. The song had pretty good reviews overall with only a couple people who said it wasn’t his best compared to other work that he’s put out.

Let’s get into the records that this album broke. First off was Spotify. He earned a Guinness World Records title for the most streamed track on Spotify in 24 hours. The song had 16,103,849 streams in the first 24 hours. The song also became the most-streamed song in the United States in a single day, beating out Olivia Rodrigo.

Now, let’s get into my thoughts on the single. As a Harry Styles fan, I was very excited about this new song! It is very catchy, and upbeat yet the lyrics are still very emotional and tell a story. I do know that he has other songs that I like better based off of the sound but, artists usually will release singles that will be radio hits before releasing the rest of the album. I love the song though and cannot wait for the full album!
