In this murder mystery, there is a lot of deceit and unexpected turns that take place. Unlike many other mystery movies, I was taken for surprise at the culprit reveal. So, if you’re looking for an unpredictable murder mystery, this is definitely one to watch. Although this is a great movie to watch alone, I believe it’s more intriguing to watch with other people since you get to discuss the assumptions from different perspectives.
Ratings/Award(s)
Aside from some of my favorite actors and actresses starring in this film, I really appreciated the unpredictable plot. Although the special effects could have been improved in my opinion, the film was well done overall. Personally, I rate this movie 4 out of 5 stars although ratings from other cites are a bit lower than I think it deserves.
Rotten Tomatoes rated this film 61% on the tomatometer and 54% audience score. IMDb has rated it 6.5 out of 10 stars.
Murder on the Orient Express received an award for Best Production Design – International Studio Feature Film – Period from the British Film Designers Guild Awards.
Summary
This film is based off of the book Murder on the Orient Express written by Agatha Christie. The plot of the film takes place in 1934 during the winter. A well-known detective, Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh), plans a trip and conveniently enough is able to board First Class on the Orient Express at the last minute. Detective Poirot ends up sharing a cabin with Hector MacQueen (Josh Gad) who is the assistant for Edward Ratchett (Johnny Depp).
During the duration of this trip, Ratchett makes it apparent that he may be in danger of being murdered when offering detective Poirot to pay him as a bodyguard. Soon enough, Ratchett is found dead in his cabin with a dozen stab wounds. Due to the train being stopped because of the snowy conditions, Poirot is in charge of the investigation until the police show up. In the midst of this investigation, everyone’s dirty laundry gets aired out including murder victim Ratchett. Who on the train could be capable enough to kill Ratchett?
