This week, all the eyes in the NHL were on New Jersey. New Jersey hosted the annual NHL Stadium Series at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford. This years event was a huge success, with each game drawing around 80,000 spectators to the stadium.

The first game was a matchup between the Philadelphia Flyers and the New Jersey Devils, and this game was all Devils. The game ended with a score of 6-3 and the Devils currently sit fourth in the metropolitan division.

The second game of the weekend was a matchup of the New York teams with the Islanders taking on the Rangers. This game got off to a quick start with a goal in the first two minutes of the game by Erik Gustafsson, shortly followed by a fight involving rookie Matt Rempe.

The game quickly got out of hand for the Rangers after giving up three first period goals. However, down 5-3 with less five minutes left in the game the Rangers scored two goals to send the game into overtime.

The game was ended quickly off a chaotic goal from Artemi Panerin and the Rangers clawed their way back in what has my vote for the game of the year.

However the biggest winner on the weekend was the NHL, who get credit for hosting this spectacular event. The average NHL arena holds at most 20,000 spectators, meanwhile in two games this weekend Metlife Stadium hosted over 160,000 spectators.

These types of events allow those who may not be “hockey fans” to experience the sport in a whole new way and get them interested in what is an amazing sport.
