Matt Rempe Makes Himself Known in his First Month

The NHL season is starting to heat up, and so are the New York Rangers. They currently sit second in the league standings, trailing only the Florida Panthers by 2 points. However, in the past few weeks, a newcomer has had the spotlight on him. Matt Rempe made his NHL debut on February 18th in the NHL Stadium Series matchup against the Islanders.

Via Rangers on X: Matt Rempe has had a huge first week in the NHL

Rempe had 1 second of ice time in his first match before he and Islanders Matt Martin dropped the gloves for his first NHL fight. In a league that has dulled down the amount of fights, it is refreshing to see a young player bringing the intensity back into the league.

Over the course of his first three games, Rempe only tallied 9 minutes and 56 seconds of time on ice, while racking up 27 penalty minutes. Rempe has played in seven NHL games, and already has four fights.

His latest being a heavyweight bought with Maple Leafs winger Ryan Reaves. It was anticipated the two may go at it before the game, and it finally happened about midway through the third period.

Rempe has certainly made an impression on the league, and the Rangers should be glad to have his intensity on their bench. As the NHL season wraps up, it’d be wise to keep an eye on Rempe as the games become more meaningful.

This kid is a victim of the NHL “Code” and most likely will be out of the league in two years tops. He is also a prime candidate for CTE. Having said that, he should also be meeting with the NHL this week for skating 30 feet at full speed to leave his feet and drive a Maple Leaf player into the boards

Agreed on the last point. Definitely an unnecessary hit. But the kid hasn’t had the opportunity not to fight. Opposition keeps challenging him and obviously he is not one to back down. Obviously this is detrimental to his long term health but it is also refreshing to see a bit of intensity back in the league. It is a contact sport and over the past decade it has become less and less of that.
