{"id":112,"date":"2023-03-27T02:31:34","date_gmt":"2023-03-27T02:31:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fredstories.com\/soundafide\/?p=112"},"modified":"2023-03-27T02:32:03","modified_gmt":"2023-03-27T02:32:03","slug":"march-playlist-bedridden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fredstories.com\/soundafide\/march-playlist-bedridden\/","title":{"rendered":"March Playlist: Bedridden"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/playlist\/51aiPiKGvFBCBt34SAzJOg?si=00683be6dd724e7f\">Soundafide Monthly<\/a> playlist, a project featuring our Artist of the Month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bedridden___\/?hl=en\">Bedridden<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of last year, Stereogum released a gargantuan passion-project of an article titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stereogum.com\/2209014\/the-new-wave-of-american-shoegaze\/columns\/sounding-board\/\">The New Wave of American Shoegaze<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the piece was met with mixed reactions from the included band\u2019s themselves, it showcased scene heavyweights, like They Are Gutting A Body of Water (TAGABOW) and Wednesday, as well as promising up-and-coming acts such as Greg Freeman (check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/fredstories.com\/soundafide\/march-playlist-yungcyberprincess-yawning-portal-your-arms-are-my-cocoon\/\">recent feature<\/a>) and Hotline TNT.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One group that missed out on all the noisy guitar attention, is the Brooklyn alt-rock-shoegaze band, Bedridden. The group\u2019s debut EP, <em>Amateur Heartthrob<\/em>, was released at the end of January, about a month after the article was published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Straddling a plethora of 90\u2019s rock influences, and modern gaze innovations, Bedridden finds solace in deliberate surges of chaotic distortion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From his first thrift-store-found guitar, a Christmas present with Kurt Cobain\u2019s name engraved on it, to his hardcore background, Bedridden\u2019s frontman, Jack Riley, has had multiple phases with music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Riley said that Bedridden previously appeared as a four-piece band in New Orleans with \u201cMBV-like poppy shoegaze songs \u2026 still with the same driving guitar, but &#8230; more melodic, not as punky.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When he moved to New York about three years ago, he had a rude awakening and started to write differently based on his surroundings. In a culmination of this experience, <em>Amateur Hearttrob<\/em> is \u201cless dreamy and fun, and a little more personal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The intro track, a misty abstraction named \u201cLogger,\u201d smolders with emotional-stress while lyrics touch on an innocent love interest that sours over time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The song\u2019s poisoned admiration is represented in the seemingly-innocent line \u201cautograph the back of my lunchbox.\u201d The lyric means a lot to Riley personally, encapsulating a specific moment, while also appearing as a tongue-in-cheek artist bio on multiple streaming services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long-suffering guitar lines strife effectively, while Riley\u2019s at-odds delivery is as disdained as it is regretful while singing the conclusive lyrics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLeave your junk in the car<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I clean it out every Sunday anyways<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My flashlight just burnt out<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m not afraid of the dark anymore<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drive slowly (x4)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grow lonely\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Distorions bleeds over into the following track, \u201cClara\u2019s Mouth.\u201d The lead single captures the feeling of spinning out of control with a submersive, undulating guitar melody worth thousands of headphone listens in private moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soft-spoken chorus twinkles, before an angular guitar part welcomes a fume of distortion and listeners are immersed within the downcast verses once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The release comes from Julia\u2019s War Records, a community based record label run by TAGABOW lead singer, Doug Dulgarian. With the support from Julia\u2019s War, and the accompanying Philadelphia scene of thriving left-field shoegaze acts, the group looks forward to their next record tentatively set to release this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the time being, stream <em>Amateur Heartthrob<\/em> on <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/2m41Qy8a5loQjQvSIGHFJ8?si=_QphgZ-OQL2hOFXpZwR3BA\">Spotify<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/us\/album\/amateur-heartthrob-ep\/1660470774\">Apple Music<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/bedriddenbandusa.bandcamp.com\/album\/amateur-heartthrob-2\">Bandcamp<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Check out the Soundafide Monthly playlist, a project featuring our Artist of the Month, Bedridden.
