Degrassi
I remember watching episodes of Degrassi when I was younger.
I would only watch them when there weren’t any other shows that I liked available.
During my junior year of college, my friend and I decided to watch the entire series…
That might’ve been one of my best decisions.
Synopsis:
Degrassi: Next Generation follows the lives of adolescents and teenagers who reside on Degrassi Street in Toronto, Canada.
The Canadian original show that created the Degrassi franchise is “The Kids of Degrassi Street”, which aired in 1979.
Degrassi: Next Generation aired in 2001 until its cancellation in 2015.
The group of kids and teenagers that the show follows deal with a variety of different issues and problems.
Degrassi: Next Generation gives an insight to what this generation deals with.
Degrassi created a plot method for each episode.
Plot A is focused on one character’s issues and ends each episode.
Plot B is often more amusing, or it can be utilized to push that season’s storyline ahead.
Degrassi: Next Generation has 14 seasons with 15-45 episodes per season. Degrassi: Next Class has 4 seasons with 10 episodes per season.
My Thoughts:
Degrassi is one of the best teen dramas I have ever seen.
Degrassi tackles issues that teens deal with, such as sexual orientation, self-image issues, peer pressure, racial issues and relationship problems.
The show also touches on darker issues such as school shootings, sexual assault, suicide and teenage pregnancy.
Degrassi manages to tackle these issues in a way that makes you relate to the show and its characters.
It also portrays the repercussions of individuals’ actions and how they must deal with it.
Unlike most shows, I actually related to some of the stuff that occurred on the show.
People who take the time to watch the entire show usually end up loving it. The characters are amazing.
Within the 14 seasons, you pretty much watch a lot of these characters grow up, so you end up connecting to them.
You start to feel like you are one of the students attending Degrassi High.
One thing I loved about Degrassi is that a majority of the characters stayed for a long time.
One of the characters, Emma, is there from 7th grade until she is in college.
Degrassi is a wholesome show that takes you on a rollercoaster ride.
The show lacks a lot of the sexual scenes that most people are used to seeing in shows.
I enjoyed the show for that reason because sometimes shows are too graphic when it comes to sexual situations.
One of my favorite characters is the dazzling, Paige Michalchuck.
Paige originally characterizes your typical manipulative, cruel Queen B.
As the seasons went on, I started to see a compassionate and ambitious person. My friend originally despised Paige, but he also grew to love her.
Another honorable mention is the iconic Manny Santos.
Manny was bubbly, down to earth and a great friend to her bestie, Emma.
Manny deals with a variety of issues throughout the show that made me love her.
She struggled with popularity and being slut shamed, which are topics I feel many teens can relate to.
She is the original IT girl and I love that for her.
The Naiyah Rating:
All things considered; I would have to give Degrassi a 5-star rating.
Degrassi is a great teen drama.
Degrassi provides addictive drama, extraordinary characters and great storylines.
I truly believe this is a show that anyone can relate to.
The show deals with so many situations that it would be hard to not find a connection.
Degrassi is an amazing show and I wish more people watched it.
If you want an amazing show that gives you the BEST content… then Degrassi is for you.
Where to Watch:
