Hello, Sampl’d readers!
This week I am introducing a new concept on Sampl’d. Sometimes artists have such an extensive catalog that they can even sample themselves, yes, THEMSELVES.
This is some next-level skill that I’m sure many other artists wish they had to their credit. Although I couldn’t too many artists that have done this, the ones I did find happened to be some of my favorite artists that I have referred to repeatedly on this blog as well as the Sampl’d Instagram page.
I’m going to start off by showing you Miss Janet Janet being iconic and sampling her own song “I Get Lonely,” from The Velvet Rope (1997) album in the track “Dammn Baby” from one of her more recent records, Unbreakable (2015).
This next song is by, yes you guessed it, Mariah Carey. Although she doesn’t sample a direct melody from one of her songs, she has a whole line of lyrics that refer to different songs by her:
“For the record
You’ll always be a part of me no matter what you do (Always Be My Baby)
And for the record
Can’t nobody say I didnt give my all to you
And for the record
I told you underneath the stars that you belong to me (We Belong Together)
For the record
It’s obvious that we just can’t let go of us, honey
As always, there is more where that came from! Head over to Instagram to catch three more examples of self-sampling! We got more from Janet and Mariah and even some Chaka Khan! https://www.instagram.com/sampld2022/
