Hello, Sampl’d like listeners!
This week on our playlist, we have a sample from one of my favorite ’80s bands, Cameo. Cameo is an American funk band formed in 1972. If anyone needs some contemporary, “relevant” facts to draw parallels to the group, two of its fourteen original members were hired by renowned hip-hop group Outkast. The group’s longevity is evident because, as of 2009, some of the ensemble’s original members continue to perform together. Cameo has sold more than 18 million albums and is considered one of the best funk bands of its era.
The song I will be focusing on is “Candy.” The song was released as a single from the group’s 1986 album, Word Up!. At the song’s release, it reached #1 on the Billboard R&B Charts.
Now, let’s get to the actual samples! “Candy” has been sampled across three different decades (’90s, ’00s, ’10s) and by various distinguished artists such as 2pac, Snoop Dogg, Mariah Carey, and Beyoncé (just to name a few.)
As always, I am going to upload some of my favorites from the list above right here in the post and then you can head over to the Sampl’d Instagram page to hear some bonus grabs! https://www.instagram.com/sampld2022/
