Hello, Sampl’d readers!
I’m so excited about this week’s sample because I know you all have heard this instrumentation used in Beyoncé’s infamous 2003 song “Crazy in Love” from her debut solo album, Dangerously in Love. The song was the lead single of the album and can be best described as a pop love song that incorporates hip hop, soul, and 1970s-style funk music elements. When I hear that infectious horn riff, I have no choice but to turn it up!
Speaking of 1970s-style funk music, the sample for this track comes from the R&B/soul vocal quartet, The Chi-Lites, on their 1970 studio album, I Like Your Lovin’ (Do You Like Mine?) The song we’re focusing on is “Are You My Woman? (Tell Me So)”, a moderate hit at the time of its original single release has since become one of the group’s best-known tracks after Beyoncé’s usage of the beat.
Although “Crazy in Love” made the most notorious use of The Chi-Lites’s song, it’s sampled across three different decades by various artists:
The Blueprint:
- “Are You My Woman? (Tell Me So)” — The Chi-Lites (’70)
1990s:
- “#1 With a Bullet” — Kool G Rap & DJ Polo feat. Big Daddy Kane (’92)
2000s:
- “Crazy in Love” — Beyoncé feat. Jay-Z (’03)
2010s:
- “Emotional”– Saweetie feat. Quavo (’19)
