Welcome back, readers!
This week on Sampl’d I will be breaking down a sample from The Stylistics. These Philly natives are hands-down one of my favorite soul groups from the mid-20th century. One of my favorite songs is actually the one that we’re discussing today!
The song is called, “You Are Everything.” The track premiered on the group’s self-titled debut album of 1971 which has gone on to be recognized as “a sweet soul landmark.”
The song has been sampled across five different decades:
1970s:
- “Who’s Lovin You” – Dobie Gray (’78)
1980s:
- “I Thought It Took A Little Time” – Stacy Lattisaw (’85)
- “Call Me On The Telephone” – Kings of Pressure (’89)
1990s:
- “Child Support Blues” – Sheep Doggy Dogg ft. Def-Soul & LSD (’94)
- “Lonely Daze” – Ginuwine (’96)
- “Everything” – Mary J Blige (’97)
- “Things Just Ain’t The Same” – Deborah Cox (’97)
2000s:
- “The One” – Jennifer Lopez (’02)
- “I Can’t Mess With You” – Nivea ft. The Dream (’05)
- “Torn” – LaToya Luckett (’06)
- “Life of the Party” – Joe (’07)
2010s:
- “Happy Alone” – Z-Ro (’11)
- “Just Like That” – KR (’18)
This is definitely one of the most sampled tracks that I’ve covered here on Sampl’d! With that being said, I am going to upload some of my favorites from the list above right here in the post and then you can head over to the Sampl’d Instagram page to hear some bonus grabs! https://www.instagram.com/sampld2022/
