I\u2019m Max Hamilton and I am a Hooker, it\u2019s just fun to say. The hooker is one of the more important roles in the forwards just based on what they do in scrums and on the field.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Rugby has 15 people on the field at once, we are all numbered out 1 – 15, your number is also your position. This helps the referee keep track of the players on the field. A\u00a0 hookers number is 2. As a Hooker I have a few jobs on the field, specifically in the scrum and lineouts, these are all times where the referee has to stop the play of the game, and we have basically a set point to restart by.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Scrums happen when there is a \u201cknock on,\u201d when the ball is dropped forward. This happens when you pass the ball forward, or drop it on the ground forward, and some penalties end in scrums as well. Scrums are when all of the forwards come together, literally. 8 of the bigger players on the team come together, (Forwards) and we all bind in and push. The sir will say, \u201cCrouch, Bind, set,\u201d on set we are clear to engage. The ball gets tossed in and comes out on either side of the scrum, depending on which hooker got to the ball first with their feet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lineouts happen when the ball is kicked out of bounds, kind of like soccer, except the forwards line up between the 5 meter line and the 15 meter line, on the sideline.\u00a0\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

The hookers job in the lineout if on offense, is to throw the ball straight down the tunnel created by the two lines of players. The idea is that when I throw the ball my team knows when to jump, and the jumpers know when and where to be in the line. We can move around before the ball is thrown, this gives us a timing advantage for a specific play.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
