This is a quick explanation of rugby, If you are a player or already know how to play rugby, stick around, this is going to be very informative.
15 as 1, that’s the best way to explain rugby, you have to play as a team if you want to win. It’s very simple, the less thirsty you are the more your team will score, as soon as someone grows an ego on the field, they never pass the ball.
Passing the ball is interesting, everyone puts a lot of effort into spinning the ball, it does not matter if you spin the ball as long as it gets to where it’s supposed to go. IT CAN BE UGLY, but the faster the ball gets there the better. You can only pass the ball backwards, really from the side, If the ball leaves your hands and falls forward it’s called a nock on, these result in a scrum, pass it backwards, kick it forwards, plain and simple.
Geometry taught us angles, that’s all rugby really is, two lines of people running towards each other how do we create an opening for someone to run through with the ball. The offense needs to pull in multiple defenders, and then pass the ball to a teammate that can run through the opening created.
Defenders are red, Offense is blue, they will pass the ball down the line and draw in the defense.
When someone gets tackled a ruck is formed, I love rucks, they are one of my favorite things about rugby. They are full of random rules, it gets complicated. When the ball carrier goes down, his support players need to respond. Usually a support player is a bigger person who can hold their own. When you are tackled you are on the ground, obviously, but from however your laying on the ground is called the gate. So if you are lying stretched out sideline to sideline you will have a big gate, compared to laying on your stomach pointing head and toes, from goal line to goal line.
When a ruck is formed above the tackled player, it has to stay contained through the “gate,” players will come together and defend your possession of the ball, if not the other team can grab the ball if they run through the gate, the ball is constantly a live ball, and if you get tackled and hold onto the ball you could get penalized, for playing off the ground.
I like rucks because they are where a lot of contact happens that is more of a brawl, protect your teammate on the ground so stand over him, protect the ball possession, and do as much legal damage you can to the other team.
When you score, you are supposed to touch the ball to the ground, in the try zone, the ball has to touch the ground, if you touch the ball and score a try, you get 5 points, wherever the ball was touched on the ground, is where the teams kicker has to line up off of.
The kicker is lined up off of the original place spot of the ball, he or she backed up to their comfortable spot for kicking, then they place it on a kicking tee and aim their shot. If the kicker makes their shot, it’s an extra 2 points for the “conversion kick.”
The kicker also can kick the ball off of a penalty, so if the team got a penalty where the team captain decides that we should kick for points we will, it is an additional 3 points if you score off a penalty kick, if you miss the ball it is instantly live again.
Games go for 80 minutes with a 10 minute half time, 40 minute halves. Each team has a starting 15, they can only sub 7 players in at that point, so it’s important to really pick your playing 22, off of the full team roster.
