Beyond the Court

Having a team helps youngsters develop important social skills. Athletes gain knowledge on how to cooperate, respect others’ abilities, share, and offer one another support and encouragement. All sports teams and venues need to be diverse, equitable, inclusive, supportive, and safe because sports can have such a significant impact on young people’s lives. The growth of young athletes is greatly influenced by these circumstances, therefore fostering fair and secure environments should come before competing.

There are lots of fantastic opportunities for children to be apart of a team. Full Court Hoops is a great program located in Buffalo NY. Their beliefs and committed coaches aid in inspiring and motivating young girls to play basketball. My eyes were opened when I discovered the influence coaches have over players as a former player who is now a coach. Now, I don’t mean to seem “authoritarian,” but a coach may make or break a child’s participation in a sport. But It is our responsibility to uplift, support, and challenge.

I developed my basketball skills in this group, but they also attempt to instill values outside of the court. You have no clue the influence you can have on a child’s life when you coach; it’s about so much more than just xs and os.
