Basic Dribbling Drill for Beginners

Drill Instructions: The drill is quite simple, making it easier to introduce abilities to novice players. Set up players along the sideline, the baseline, or wherever there is room.

 Each player requires a ball. The instructor tells the players to take an athletic stance and dribble the ball. The coach must demonstrate each style of dribble as well as crucial teaching elements.

Drill Progression for Beginners Here’s a recommended progression to teach basic dribbling skills to youth players:

  1. Right hand pound dribble
  2. Left hand pound dribble
  3. Half circle right hand
  4. Half circle left hand
  5. Continuous crossovers
  6. One dribble crossovers
  7. Control dribble right hand
  8. Control dribble left hand

This is a good progression to learn the basic fundamentals of dribbling. 

Important Learning Points It is critical for coaches to emphasize the following points: 

On each dribble, the ball should make contact with the finger pads (not the palm of hand). 

Pound the ball as hard as you possibly can! 

Keep your gaze up (ahead) while dribbling.
