I thought it might be interesting to compile a list of some of the best horror directors and their personal favorite horror movies.
In no particular order, SlashFilm.com rated the following people as the 15 Best Horror Movie Directors Of All Time.
I also included what they’re most known for, and with the help of Far Out Magazine, I was able to find their favorite films.
George Romero (Night of the Living Dead series)- On the Waterfront (Elia Kazan, 1954)
John Carpenter (Halloween series)- Citizen Kane (Orson Welles, 1941)
Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street series)- The Exorcist (William Friedkin – 1973)
Sam Raimi (The Grudge & Evil Dead series)- Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960)
James Whale (Frankenstein & The Invisible Man)-
David Cronenberg (The Fly remake)- Don’t Look Now (Nicolas Roeg, 1973)
David Lynch (Eraserhead)- Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday (Jacques Tati, 1953)
Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre series)-
Dario Argento (Suspira)- Hour of the Wolf (Ingmar Bergman, 1968)
Terence Fisher (60s horrors featuring Christopher Lee)- I think it’s safe to assume the original versions of the movies he remade are his favorites.
Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth)- Frankenstein (James Whale, 1931)
James Wan (Saw series)- The Others (Alejandro Amenábar, 2001)
Mary Harron (American Psycho)- Deep Red (Dario Argento, 1975)
F.W. Murnau (Nosferatu)-
Park Chan-Wook (Oldboy)- Ms. 45 (Abel Ferrara, 1981)
I’m sure you noticed some of these are blank, and that’s because not only has Far Out Magazine been able to find their favorite films, but I couldn’t find any records of their answers.
