Myths About Veganism
Welcome back Veggie lovers,
For this week’s blog post I will be separating myths from reality regarding veganism.
More and more plant based foods are coming out onto the scene, which means more delicious plant based options for vegans/vegetarians and those who are wanting to start their plant based journey.
Considering that plant based diets are still not considered mainstream lifestyles, there are several misconceptions that surround plant based diets. Below I will be debunking some of the most common myths about veganism.
Vegans Don’t Get Enough Protein
The number one myth I get and hear all the time is that vegans can not meet their daily protein needs through a plant based diet, which is very much false.
Vegans can meet their daily protein needs through a variety of plant-based protein sources such as lentils, quinoa, tofu, nuts ,seeds, etc.
All you have to do to get all the essential nutrients in your body is to eat a balanced diet that incorporates a variety of types of plant foods.
Your body takes care of the rest. Accurate protein intake varies from person to person so if you want to make sure you are getting the right amount you can use any type of health calculator which allows you to track your protein intake.
Not to mention that too much protein from animal sources can lead to many complications such as kidney damage, while excess protein from plants seem to have no harm on the body.
Vegan Diets Are Expensive
Like I mentioned in my post last week, it all depends on what you are buying.
For example last week I focused on the many ways you could save money while being vegan, obviously if you are constantly buying overpriced prepackaged vegan food of course it will hurt your wallet.
Some of the healthiest vegan foods are also the least costly (especially when compared to organic or grass-fed meat and dairy products).
Packaged meat, egg, and dairy alternatives tend to be the pricier vegan items, so serve them as occasional treats rather than everyday fare. Not only will you save money, but you’ll then focus your diet on healthier whole foods.
Vegan Diets Are Unhealthy
The truth is, yes vegan diets can be unhealthy. Like most ways of eating, a protocol that eliminates animal products can be as healthy or unhealthy as you want it to be.
It’s one of the common mistakes plant-based eaters make causing them to give up because they feel sick assuming that vegan automatically equals healthy.
It all depends on the food you are buying and choosing to put into your body, so yes if you are constantly eating vegan pizzas, cookies, chips, etc you will feel sick and malnourished.
Like any diet it is okay to eat things like this in moderation but to maintain a healthy vegan diet you should be consuming plant foods in their whole form as much as possible.
Veganism Is Only About Food
Veganism is much more than dietary choices. Someone following a vegan lifestyle should typically stay away from anything animal-based.
Such as leather clothing items, jewelry made of animal products. It’s a lifestyle based on overall concerns around animal welfare.
