Hey, remember ToonTown online? If you don’t, man you sure missed out. ToonTown online was Disney’s foray into the rise of early 2000s MMO games after World of Warcraft became the mega-hit it would remain for years to come. It was a lot like those social MMO games that you’d sit your kids down on and let them basically parent themselves, but this one had an authentic Disney charm!
In the game, your character would be some form of anthropomorphic animal (rabbit, cat, dog, etc.) that lived in…well, ToonTown. Players would have houses and invite people over to parties and do all the usual social things people do in these sorts of games. You could also spend your parents’ hard earned money in this game on in-game cosmetics!
There was also an enemy in this game: the Cogs, who just straight up ARE businessmen. Not, like, Scrooge levels of businessmen, but evil businessmen nonetheless. Players would travel to the Cogs’ home bases and attack them using slapstick, hilarious gags such as pies, spray bottles, the usual in a turn based fighting style with up to 4 Toons.
The game went for about 10 years after its release in 2003, but closed on September 19, 2013, due to ToonTown online “no longer fitting the business model of Disney”. Yeah right, you guys just didn’t wanna admit to really being cogs.
Anyways, ToonTown Online itself has fallen, but there is still a ray of light! ToonTown Rewritten is a free to play revival of the original ToonTown, allowing players to enjoy the experience of beating Cogs and having fun with thousands of other players!
What are you waiting for? The Cogs aren’t gonna stop juts because Disney’s left! Get out there and be goofy! Not…not THE Goofy, just…goofy in general.
