Saturday Night Live has been a personality trait of mine for as long as I can remember. It all started when I was probably way too young to watch the show. My home life as a child was full of laughter and joking. I grew up in New York forty minutes from the city. This made it so my connection to New York City was very strong. I was able to see these people who lived where I lived to do something I love.
Saturday Night Live first premiered on NBC on October 11th, 1975. This was a new late-night comedy show. The cast at the time was Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, John Belushi, and Laraine Newman. The reason these people are important is because they set the tone for what the show is today.
The cast today is significantly larger than at the beginning. The current cast is Michael Che, Mikey Day, Andrew Dismukes, Chloe Fineman, Heidi Gardner, Marcello Hernandez, Punkue Johnson, James Austin Johnson, Colin Jost, Molly Kearney, Michael Longfellow, Ego Nwodim, Sarah Sherman, Kenan Thompson, Chloe Troast, Devon Walker and Bowen Yang.
Needless to say that as the show has gone on it has gotten bigger in both cast and viewership.
Aside from the cast, people watch this show for the hosts, usually on any given Saturday Night Live episode. There is a host and then a musical guest. A larger amount of people than I originally thought actually only tune in depending on who is hosting and who is performing.
The show has many iconic skits and scenes that have been laughed about for generations. This website will also. focus on some of those timeless skits and do a deep dive into the writing creativity and production of those influential skits
The reason I chose to do a website on this topic is that I feel like a lot of people from around the world and the NYC area have some connection with this show. This connection can be anything. For some, it was a way to bond with their family; for some, it was a way to escape the world they were in for some time to relax and unwind.
Feel free to look at this site for whatever you need at the time. This will hopefully be a space where people can learn and grow but also relax and laugh.
