Shades of “The Color Purple”

- April 18, 2021 - Sarah Mayfield

“The Color Purple” was first known as best selling book than Oscar winning movie before it entered the stage.

Alice Walker, the author of “The Color Purple”, was the first black woman to win both the Pulitzer and National Books awards.

The story surrounds the character, Celie, a survivor of incest who lives most of her life as the servant of a violent man who refuses to marry her. He sees her ugliness as fit for backbreaking work and nothing else.

The story of “The Color Purple” focuses on different challenging themes of abuse; physical, emotional, and sexual.

“The Color Purple” focuses on empowering woman.

For too long, women were told they weren’t worth as much as a man. They were told to be quiet and accept that status quo.

When Cynthia Erivo sings the song, “I’m Here”, it is one of the most striking moments of the musical. It’s incredibly emotional and everyone in the room can feel the passion behind each lyric.

The song shows that she is a powerful woman who is full of love, and doesn’t need this abusive man to love her.

She has all these wonderful people and a wonderful home.

Towards the end of the song. the tempo changes and she sings the lyrics “I’m Beautiful and I’m Here.”

Watching her sing such powerful lyrics takes your breath away.

It speaks to all of us, we should all be reminded that we are beautiful and we are here.
