“Miss Saigon” had its first premiere in 1989. After that, people have been protesting and supporting the musical ever since.
I first saw “Miss Saigon” a
Most musicals have a signature moment of the story. “Phantom of the Opera” has the Chandelier and “Le Mis” has the barricade. For “Miss Saigon” the signature moment was the helicopter.
I was so surprised and amazed when the helicopter entered the stage. It was an amazing part of the set design.
“Miss Saigon” tells the story of a White American soldier falling in love with a Vietnamese girl during the Vietnam War.
The musical was praised many times for having a diverse cast and showing the Vietnamese perspective of the war.
The musical is also criticized for its stereotypical depiction of Asian women as prostitutes and Asian men as cold and treacherous.
I think this comes back to the importance of having discussions.
It is important to continue the examination and discussion on stereotypes in theatre.
Similar to what I said with Show Boat, instead of having the audience leave right after the show theaters should have an, after the show discussion with the audience and Vietnamese cast members to discuss the story of the musical and the stereotypes.
Theatre will continue to shine a light and reflect our society. We must continue to celebrate what theatre does right and criticize when they get it wrong.
