Eating three meals a day is ingrained in society’s minds as a standard way to manage our appetite.
However, we all know that everyone doesn’t follow this so-called “rule” to nutrition.
The main culprit to this is snacks.
Snacks get a negative stigma but I think that they are necessary to fueling your body when you might need it in between meals.
As someone who has been an athlete for the majority of their life, making sure I am nourishing my body is something that I pay close attention to.
With that, sometimes three meals a day is not enough to fill me, even if I am not active that day.
Taking that into consideration, I have accumulated many snacks over the years that I believe are fulfilling and will satisfy any craving you may have.
The first snack that I have been obsessed with for years now is hummus. I usually eat hummus with pita chips, carrots, bell peppers, and pretzels, but the opportunities are endless.
I think the main reason why I love hummus so much is because of its versatility. You can eat it with so many different foods, and to top it all off chickpeas are packed with protein.
My favorite flavor of hummus is either roasted garlic or pinenut. So if you haven’t tried those yet- definitely pick them up next time you’re at the store.
Another great bite is greek yogurt with granola and/or fruit.
Up until recently, I almost forgot how good this combo can be. Greek yogurt is a great way to get calcium, as well as protein.
While you could just eat yogurt alone, I prefer to add some toppings for extra taste and texture. Granola is one of my favorite toppings because of the crunch it has. Some other great add-ons I put in are blueberries, chia seeds, apples, and even chocolate chips.
The brands I usually reach for are Oikos and Light & Fit, but any kind works.
The combinations with greek yogurt are limitless, making it east to mix and match.
I have always been a huge nut fan ever since I can remember. They are so easy to snack on and with the array of different kinds, you never get bored.
Nuts are my favorite source of healthy fats, which is an important part of your diet.
In particular, my go-to nuts to purchase are the Pistachios salt & pepper, unsalted or wasabi-soy flavor almonds, and honey roasted peanuts.
Another neat thing to do with nuts is to make your own trail mix (or you can just buy it already prepared). But combining sweet, savory, and salty flavors is guaranteed to taste great no matter what mood you’re in.
Preparing snacks doesn’t need to be hard, so I have some options that require no work at all.
My current obsessions are Skinny Pop, dried mango, and white cheddar Pop Corners.
These are the kind of foods that you can’t just have one bite of, once you start, it’s hard to stop.
I could probably write a whole novel on snacks to eat, but for now we’ll stick with my top 4.
Anyways, keep on snacking! 🙂
