There has been one main, consistent thing for the New York Islanders for the past couple of years. That has been the Identity Line.
The Identity Line is the Islanders 4th and checking line who consists of Matt Martin, Casey Cizikas, and Cal Clutterbuck. They all have been playing together since the 2013-14 season.
As good as they have been in the past, their play has regressed massively the past few seasons, and was noticeably bad in the playoffs.
In this age of fast paced hockey, Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck are just way too slow to keep up with opposing skaters and it is hurting the Islanders.
Which is why I ask this question, is this the end of the Identity Line?
It depends what the organization thinks, but I say yes.
Cal and Matt are going to get a year older, and even more slow, and it must be tiring for Casey and he deserves better line mates to play with.
The Islanders could run out a better 4th line with Simon Holmstrom or Zach Parise on the left, Casey Cizikas in the middle, and Hudson Fasching on the right.
That way it can be a speedy, but checking fourth line and can be more effective than the identity line is ready to give us.
If they do wanna move on it will be tricky, Cal Clutterbuck and Matt Martin still have one more year each on their respective contracts.
However, if they can figure out a way to get rid of them whether that be sending them down to Bridgeport, buying their contracts out, or trading them it will be in their best interests.
What do you guys think the Islanders should do about them? Should they keep the same line, or go with the quicker line?
