Last night in Pittsburgh, The Islanders won against the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in Overtime. However, it didn’t always look as promising as the result at the end of the night showed.

After Anders Lee’s power play goal at the 5:23 mark of the first period, the Penguins completely outplayed the Islanders and got two quick ones from Jake Guentzel and Jason Zucker to make it 2-1. The shots that period was 13-7 Penguins.

The Penguins continued to outplay the Islanders in the second period where the Islanders flat out couldn’t create much offense and looked sloppy defensively.

At the 10:49 mark of the second period, Josh Archibald scored to make it 3-1 Penguins and the shots were 11-6 that period.

Coming out of the third period, the Islanders started to look better but couldn’t capitalize on the power plays they were given.

Finally, at the 14:31 mark of the third period, Hudson Fasching scored in his second straight game to diminish the Penguins lead to 3-2.

With 1:15 left, Anders Lee scored his second of the game to continue his hot streak to tie the game at 3-3 and the Islanders and Penguins would go to Overtime to see who would get a crucial extra point.

After a few key saves by Ilya Sorokin and a failed breakaway by Kyle Palmieri, Brock Nelson scored his 28th of the year to win the game for the Islanders and they created history by sweeping the Penguins in the regular season for the first time.

The Islanders now stand at the top of the Eastern Conference Wild Card with 76 points in 67 games played, while the Penguins have 74 points in 64 games played. It will be tough for teams like the Sabres, Panthers, and Senators to keep up with the pace these two teams are having.

The Islanders next game is on Saturday, March 11th against the Washington Capitals at 7:30 at UBS Arena.
