**As a change in the topic regarding the time period in which I last discussed (1980s hip-hop), I figured with recent events that have occurred, it would be appropriate to talk about the earth-shattering controversy that revolves around Lil Nas X and his recent music video.
Released March 26, 2021, and with over 65 million views, Montero Lamar Hill other known as Lil Nas X put out his new hit song titled “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)” which happens to be both breaking down barriers and creating even greater controversy surrounding the majority culture in the US. Issuing his first mixtape/album “Nasarati” in 2018, Lil Nas X had little to no idea that his name would be brought up so much as it is currently.
In early 2019, when Lil Nas X debuted “Old Town Road,” the public immediately viewed him as this yeehaw, country cowboy in which the country music industry further denied those accusations. As he struggled to find who he was, Lil Nas officially came out as gay in June 2019 through Twitter saying “Some of y’all already know, some of y’all don’t care, some of y’all won’t fwm (f**k with me) anymore. But before this month ends, I want y’all to listen closely to C7osure (a song on Lil Nas X’s “7” album).” In this, he is referring to the oh-so-obvious gay pride symbols that he incorporated in C7osure’s music video.
Becoming more comfortable with his identity, Lil Nas released the single “HOLIDAY” in November 2020 and had everyone in the jolly mood for Christmas during the midst of the sorrow caused by the pandemic. In this music video, Lil Nas X sways away from his extensive cowboy look and leads into a more “icy”, pop-icon version of himself. Like most artists that break charts across the board, LNX did not release an album, let alone a single until recently on March 26, 2021.
For months, Lil Nas promoted and teased us with “MONTERO” as he would use it as a sample for his Tik Tok videos, which took the app by storm. However, as soon as the music video itself was released, the world had something different to say about the song.
Keep up with the next post (soon to be released!) to read what it is the world had to say about “MONTERO.” In the meantime, watch the music video below and comment with your thoughts!
