Iconic College Football Song Traditions

In the world of sports, there are always certain songs that make everyone get excited and bring the right type of energy. In College Football, they take song traditions to a whole different level and I believe that they have some of the best traditions in sports. In this post, I will be discussing some of college footballs best traditions and why they are so iconic.

Wisconsin Badgers – “Jump Around”

Let’s start off with a good one, at the University of Wisconsin they play the song “Jump Around” before the 4th quarter at every home football game. According to an article written by 2aDays.com, Wisconsin started doing this tradition back in 1998 and it’s been going on strong ever since. However, during renovations in 2003, they had to do some work on making the structure of the stadium stronger due to everyone jumping up and down during the song.

This tradition is so iconic due to how everyone in attendance at these Wisconsin football games all jump up and down together while this song is being played. For some people, this tradition may be the most exciting and entertaining part of the game because they get to engage in this iconic tradition. As the song plays, the cheerleaders and on-field entertainment workers join in on this tradition and pump up the crowd even more. With all of this being said, “Jump Around” has become one of the most iconic traditions in sports and it will continue to bring excitement to Wisconsin football games.

West Virginia Mountaineers – “Country Roads”

The next iconic tradition in college football is when West Virginia plays the iconic John Denver song “Country Roads” after every home game. This tradition has been going on for a long time and it has grown into one of the most iconic traditions in sports. This tradition brings excitement and happiness to every fan in attendance and it’s one of the easiest ways to recognize West Virginia football.

This tradition has become so iconic due to the nature of the song and what everyone does in the moment. One of the main reasons why West Virginia plays this song is so they can show their love and pride for the state of West Virginia and their college. Whenever this song comes on, every fan of West Virginia stands up, wraps their arms around each other, and sings along to the music. Even without this tradition, the song “Country Roads” is a very popular and iconic song but this has become an anthem in West Virginia. Overall, this is arguably the most iconic tradition in college football and I believe that it will only continue to be iconic for a very long time.

Michigan Wolverines – “Mr. Brightside”

Another very iconic tradition in college football is when the University of Michigan plays the song by The Killers titled “Mr. Brightside.” This tradition always happens in the 3rd quarter at every home Michigan football game and it always lives up to the hype. Whenever this tradition takes place, it always brings excitement to everyone in attendance no matter if they are winning or not. This tradition isn’t only for football for Michigan, according to 2aDays.com, Michigan plays this at many other events that happen on campus.

This has become an iconic tradition in the world of college football due to how it really gets the crowd going. Whenever this song starts to play in the stadium, the student section always starts singing along to the song first then as time goes on, more people start to sing along until the entire stadium sings along together. As shown in the video above, at night games there is a light show in the stadium whenever this song plays. Overall, this is another very iconic decision and if you ever have the chance to experience this in person, I would probably recommend it and I would also love to experience this someday.

Virgina Tech Hokies – “Enter Sandman”

Another very iconic college football tradition that happens at games is when Virginia Tech plays the song “Enter Sandman” by Metallica. This tradition always happens during the team introductions before every home game. This song never fails to bring excitement to the fans at the game but it can also strike fear into the opponents due to the nature of the song.

As the music is playing, in the background on the Jumbotron they are showing the team in the tunnel getting ready to take the field and it also plays an introduction video on the screen. As the song builds up, all of the fans in attendance start singing along to the music and are jamming out as it plays. As the team takes the field, there are a bunch of pyrotechnics on the field such as fire to match the energy of the song. On their way onto the field, the entire team smacks a sign that is hung on the wall that says “Reach for excellence” to help motivate themselves.

College football has some of the best traditions in sports and they always bring the crowd energy to a whole other level. I believe that these traditions are some of the best in sports and I believe more sports leagues should implement these types of traditions. I personally haven’t experienced any of these traditions in person, but I would love to have the opportunity to experience these.
