How Teams Use Music To Their Advantage

In sports, every team is looking for ways to gain an advantage over their opponent. This can come in many ways such as things like home field advantage, bringing in new players, or even strategizing in unique ways that their opponent wouldn’t expect. Some of the ways teams can gain a home field advantage is by playing in a unique environment like high altitudes, having loud and dedicated fans, and by finding ways to get the crowd riled up. In this article, I will be discussing ways that teams use music to get an advantage.

There are quite a few ways that teams can find an advantage by using music. One way that teams can use music to gain an advantage is by playing music that was made with the purpose of making people excited and louder. Players have the type of mindset where they can play off the energy of the crowd, so if the fans are really energetic during a big game, the mix of adrenaline and crowd energy will sometimes help the players play harder. During warmups, almost every team in sports plays music to really help bring more energy and to make it a crazier environment.

An example of teams using music designed to make fans excited is when teams play their songs after scoring points. This is mainly related to football, as most football teams both in college and the NFL have their own theme songs. For example, the Buffalo Bills have their own theme song that they play after every touchdown they score and it’s titled “Shout.” This practice helps bring the energy in the stadium to a whole other level and teams really take advantage of this to get more of an advantage.

Another way that teams use music to their advantage is by playing music in the locker room before the game. Teams play music in the locker rooms before games to help get their players energized and locked in so they can play with the right energy. While some people may believe that playing music before a game would make the players too energized, however, it’s widely believed that playing music in the locker rooms before games may actually calm down the players. This would actually be beneficial because if you play with too much energy then you might not play as well as you normally would, so being in a calmer mindset is actually key.

From my experience in sports, playing music in the locker room before games has really helped players get locked in and into the right mood. Before every game, I would always play music or my teammates would play music in the locker room while we were stretching and getting ready to play. Whenever we didn’t play music before a game, I noticed there was a slight difference with how the energy felt for me. From personal experience, I believe that playing music before a game could help you and your team with their performance.

One more way that teams can use music to their advantage is by making traditions like college teams do with music and play it during certain times in a game. As I just stated, college teams have traditions that they do at every game to make the fans engaged to help rally the team. One example of this is when Virginia Tech plays the Metallica song “Enter Sandman” before every home game when they are running out of their tunnel. This really helps bring a whole different energy to the game and in this case, it can make the players more energized and prepared to play.

Having these types of traditions within these games could make the overall environment and atmosphere a little bit tougher for the opponent to play in. While I haven’t been in one of these environments that college teams have, I have seen it enough times that I understand how crazy these environments can be and that it can give the home team an advantage. These in-game traditions really help the home teams gain a massive advantage due to how loud the crowd will get and because of how crazy these make the fans get.

In sports, every team is looking for ways to gain an advantage over their opponent and this can happen in many different ways. In this article, I discussed the many different ways that teams can use music to their advantage, and the strategies that I covered in this were using music that is designed to get the fans more energized, playing music in the locker room before games, and by making traditions that you do during the game to bring more energy. In my opinion, all of these are very good ways to gain advantages and it really makes it tougher for visiting teams to win.
