Another warning: Very biased as this is coming from a student doing at least 6 different clubs
One of the most common things you are told during orientation is to get involved, but why? Here is my list of reasons why joining clubs is one of the most important things you do as a student during college.
- Chance to make friends
This one might be a “duh” reason but it’s a very important one nonetheless. Making friends during college might be one of the most daunting things that everyone goes through during the first semester of college. One way to combat this issue is by joining a club, hey you’re with each other a lot anyways, might as well become friends while you’re at it.
- Mental health benefits
This is coming from a non-psychology major and primarily from personal experiece, but getting out of that dorm room and joining in on the fun that college has to offer is one way to boost your mental health. A lot of these clubs thrive off of bringing up the mental health of its members as classes and college life in a dorm tends to be a big drainer.
- Great resume builder
Coming from someone who applied and got into grad school, putting the clubs you’re involved in on your resume (especially if you did a highly involved e-board position like president or treasurer) can be a great conversation starter as well as proof of your dedication to your passions. And hey, wouldn’t it be fun to say you were a president of something?
- It can influence your future career
Some clubs can influence your passions and even go as far as to what you will do after you graduate. Many students fell in love with what they were doing in their club and wanted to continue that after graduation, especially in positions of leadership that can translate into a career like being a journalist.
- It’s just fun!
Hey college doesn’t just have to be about working your butt off to get that degree (though it is very important please do your homework). It’s also about having the freedom to do what you want and have fun while doing it. And that’s what clubs are all about, fun! Keep an eye out for more clubs to be talked about on this site by yours truly, who knows, maybe you’ll be convinced to join one!
