Club of the Week: Fredonia Feminists

Women on college campuses has been a thing since 1836 (is it bad that I thought it was more recent), but are women really treated equally?

Avoiding a very opinionated debate on this question, I would like to delve deeper into a club that celebrates women instead.

Fredonia Feminists, which recently returned after being on a hiatus for quite a while, is a club run by women students. With their Women’s History Month closing ceremony just happening on March 30th, their main priority is celebrating women and discussing womanhood and what troubles that might bring.

Starting their reboot slowly, the club has recently held events like film screenings that feature real women’s stories of feminism and breaking the barriers of the patriarchy, and having guest speakers talk about their experience as woman.

This to me as a woman-identifying student is important because often women are seen as lesser-than-equal to our male counterparts, and celebrating the fact that we are women on this campus holds a special place in my heart.

With them holding general body meetings every Wednesday, there are always opportunities for students to join the club and feel celebrated as women.

For e-board members, Fredonia Feminists takes a slightly different approach to roles, as there is also a focus on the history of women and how we got to the point where we can get a college education rather than staying at home, and the growth that society has made towards more equality (kinda, thanks overturn of Roe v. Wade).

This allows the club to have a more a different approach to events, as the priority is not only to celebrate women at Fredonia but to look at how we can improve as a society to make it more inclusive towards women, as there are still ongoing struggles that women have to face compared to our male counterparts.

Women’s History Month in March only amplified this mission, as guest speakers were brought to campus as well and events highlighting women’s history were held throughout the entirety of March, with the closing ceremony acting as a catalyst for what the goal was of the club; celebrating women’s history and achievements.

For future events, the club is hoping to continue to hold guest speaker events as well as more general body meetings to grow as a club.
