At least, that\u2019s what I thought until I saw a burst of fire happily blazing under a 35-foot waterfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eternal Flames Falls trail, located in Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park, is a 1.4 miles trail described by AllTrails as \u201cheavily trafficked\u201d and is rated as moderate. Which means there is a 137 foot elevation difference within .7 miles which you have to go down and then back up. It also means the trail can get muddy and slippery during rainy season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"655\" height=\"873\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fredstories.com\/dorknewyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/verticlefirefall.jpg?resize=655%2C873&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fredstories.com\/dorknewyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/verticlefirefall.jpg?w=655&amp;ssl=1 655w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fredstories.com\/dorknewyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/verticlefirefall.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fredstories.com\/dorknewyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/verticlefirefall.jpg?resize=45%2C60&amp;ssl=1 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How is a flame burning under a waterfall?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nobody knows for sure. (I know, disappointing answer).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For years, scientists believed the flame burned because of gas pockets that rise from hot shale bedrock below. The high temperatures would break down the carbon molecules in the shale, which would create natural gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But then, in 2013, a group of scientists from Indiana University found that the shale underneath the waterfall isn\u2019t hot enough nor old enough to cause gas pockets to form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, that shale gas pocket theory was shrugged off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"655\" height=\"873\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fredstories.com\/dorknewyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/flameinwater2.jpg?resize=655%2C873&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fredstories.com\/dorknewyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/flameinwater2.jpg?w=655&amp;ssl=1 655w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fredstories.com\/dorknewyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/flameinwater2.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fredstories.com\/dorknewyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/flameinwater2.jpg?resize=45%2C60&amp;ssl=1 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The flame is lit, not eternal.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a gust of wind pushes enough water on the flame, the flame \u2014 surprise \u2014 extinguishes.
