Fredonia Opera House

In April 1891, the Fredonia Opera House opened its doors for the very first time. People from throughout the region got dressed up in their classiest garments and gathered to watch a rousing performance of Josephine, Empress of the French.

Who would have thought 130 years later, people would still be coming to see performances at this same theater.

Renovations were made through the years, but unfortunately due to long periods of neglect the Opera House had to be shut down in 1981. Two years later, there was a movement to have the building torn down, which sparked controversy and backlash throughout the community. Citizens got together and formed the Fredonia Preservation Society and lobbied to save the building. They were successful in their efforts and by 1985 they had raised enough money to save and rehabilitate the theater.

Today the Opera House continues to thrive and is home to many events including movies, plays, musicals, student recitals, concerts, and more. They even offer student discounts on their ticket prices.

Some of their upcoming events include:

  • A showing of the 2021 film Cyrano on April 5th, at 7:30pm
  • “Takin’ it to the Streets: Doobie Brothers Tribute” on April 8th, at 7:30pm
  • “Art & Architecture On Screen: Easier in Art” on April 9th, at 7:30pm
  • “Remembering John Denver with Ted Vigil” on April 29th, at 7:30

They will also be hosting a 5k Run/Walk fundraiser called the “1891 Run” on April 24th at 9:00 AM. If you are interested in signing up or learning more about it you can find more information on their website at http://fredopera.org/home/.

The Fredonia Opera House is a historic landmark and a great community spot that we are lucky to have right in our backyards. Even if you are unable to participate in the fundraiser, you can show your support by purchasing tickets and attending the awesome events that they put on.
