When I first arrived at Fredonia as a freshman, I would always hear people talk about going to Point Gratiot. Naturally, I had to check it out for myself. Since then it’s become a regular spot for my friends and I.
Point Gratiot is a beautiful natural park and beach that runs alongside Lake Erie. Especially now that the weather is getting nicer, it’s the perfect spot for a day trip.
Some amenities and activities you can partake in here include:
- Life-guarded Swimming
- Tennis
- Golf
- Bike Trails
- Fishing
- Playgrounds
- Pavilions
- Picnics
There are technically two beaches, one to the east of the point and one to the west. At the tip of the point you will find the historical Dunkirk Lighthouse.
Established in 1826, the 61 ft. lighthouse is still operational today. The current tower was lit for the first time in 1875 and remains one of the most prominent on all of Lake Erie with its 27-mile radius.
You can visit the lighthouse and check out the classic architecture, extensive collection of military artifacts and beautiful view from the Observation Deck. Tours are available from May through October.
They also host various events at the park, including the Annual Lakeshore Street Rod Harbor Cruise. This is the first year since 2019 they’ve been able to put on the beloved car show due to the pandemic. It will take place on July 11, 2022 and feature live music, food vendors, prize raffles, and over 700 cars. Admission is free and donations will be accepted at the gate. Proceeds go to Chautauqua County Veterans and Dunkirk-Fredonia Meals on Wheels.
Point Gratiot is an integral part of the community. If you are from the Dunkirk area orgo to school at Fredonia, you need to check it out. And if you aren’t from around here and wish to come visit, there’s a campground in the park where you can pitch a tent or park your RV and there are many hotels close by.
(Fun Fact: The header for my blog was taken at Point Gratiot!)
