Air Fried Tofu

Ingredients:

  • 1 block of firm or extra-firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari (for gluten-free option)
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • Sesame seeds, green onions, or chopped cilantro for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Press the tofu: Remove the tofu from its packaging and drain any excess water. Wrap the tofu block in a clean kitchen towel or paper towel, then place a heavy object, like a cast-iron skillet or a stack of plates, on top of the tofu. Let it press for about 20-30 minutes to remove excess moisture.
  2. While the tofu is pressed, prepare the marinade. In a shallow dish, whisk together the soy sauce or tamari, maple syrup or agave nectar, rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar, sesame oil, grated ginger, and garlic powder.
  3. Once the tofu has been pressed, cut it into cubes or slices, depending on your preference.
  4. Toss the tofu cubes or slices in the marinade until they are evenly coated. Let them marinate for about 15-20 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  5. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 5 minutes.
  6. Remove the tofu from the marinade and transfer it to a bowl. Sprinkle the cornstarch over the tofu and toss gently to coat each piece evenly.
  7. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray or brush with oil to prevent sticking.
  8. Arrange the tofu cubes or slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving some space between each piece for air circulation.
  9. Air fry the tofu for 12-15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through the cooking time to ensure even crispiness. Cook until the tofu is golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  10. Once done, remove the crispy tofu from the air fryer and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
  11. Garnish with sesame seeds, chopped green onions, or cilantro, if desired, before serving.
