Ingredients:
- 1 block of firm or extra-firm tofu
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari (for gluten-free option)
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- Sesame seeds, green onions, or chopped cilantro for garnish
Instructions:
- Press the tofu: Remove the tofu from its packaging and drain any excess water. Wrap the tofu block in a clean kitchen towel or paper towel, then place a heavy object, like a cast-iron skillet or a stack of plates, on top of the tofu. Let it press for about 20-30 minutes to remove excess moisture.
- While the tofu is pressed, prepare the marinade. In a shallow dish, whisk together the soy sauce or tamari, maple syrup or agave nectar, rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar, sesame oil, grated ginger, and garlic powder.
- Once the tofu has been pressed, cut it into cubes or slices, depending on your preference.
- Toss the tofu cubes or slices in the marinade until they are evenly coated. Let them marinate for about 15-20 minutes to absorb the flavors.
- Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 5 minutes.
- Remove the tofu from the marinade and transfer it to a bowl. Sprinkle the cornstarch over the tofu and toss gently to coat each piece evenly.
- Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray or brush with oil to prevent sticking.
- Arrange the tofu cubes or slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving some space between each piece for air circulation.
- Air fry the tofu for 12-15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through the cooking time to ensure even crispiness. Cook until the tofu is golden brown and crispy on the outside.
- Once done, remove the crispy tofu from the air fryer and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Garnish with sesame seeds, chopped green onions, or cilantro, if desired, before serving.
