A lot of people that aren’t self proclaimed “true crime junkies” always seem to have the same question for us.

“Why do you enjoy true crime?”

Although the answer to this question can be different for everyone, I think it’s important to help others understand the appeal of true crime. I know it can seem weird at first to understand why people enjoy listening to these stories, because of course they can be really upsetting and disturbing at times.

However, true crime isn’t just about entertainment for a lot of us.

Of course, if crime and criminal justice in general is something you enjoy, it can be entertaining to watch, hear, or read about true crime cases. But it’s also very important to openly discuss true crime cases like the one’s I post about on this blog.

The United States criminal justice system has a lot of limitations. All people are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This is of course ethical and true, but sometimes police don’t have the means or reasoning to obtain evidence so a lot of criminals end up getting away with crimes for far too long, or forever.

Content creators that discuss true crime cases, especially ones that remain unsolved today, are usually trying to bring awareness to the public. The more people that hear about a case, the more opportunities there are for someone to hear it that knows something that everyone else doesn’t and push them to bring that information to the police.

It’s also important to tell true crime cases that are solved, which is all of the one’s I tend to write about on here. Solved cases are just as important to talk about because it not only keeps the memory of the victims alive, but also raises awareness of situations that you may find yourself in one day.

Murders occur all of the time, and the more you know about the signs to look for and what could happen in these situations, the more chance someone has to defend themselves in an appropriate way.

Of course anyone can be a victim, but especially women in the United States. Women tend to face some sort of crime against them at a much more alarming rate than men. If raising awareness to this through the stories of what has happened to others can save even one person’s life one day then it’s worth it.

I think it’s really important for people to understand that true crime isn’t just entertainment for a lot of us, it’s about awareness. The people have the power to see things change and happen when you come together in large numbers and fight for what you believe it right.

The huge following that true crime stories have gained over the years have led to so many changes within the criminal justice system. So many people are now standing up for what they believe it right, and advocating for those that don’t think they can on their own.

True crime has become increasingly popular for these reasons and so many more. If you enjoy watching true crime like I do, it’s not a weird hobby at all. Being socially aware of what’s happening to those around you is normal.

The true crime community is a very loving and accepting space for all people. If you’ve never tried watching true crime before, you should. Even if you don’t enjoy it that’s okay. But it’s something that creates so many more discussions for positive change that’s needed a lot of the time.
