The Clery Act requires colleges and universities to report campus crime data, support victims of violence, and publicly outline the policies and procedures they have put into place to improve campus safety.

This act was put into place after the tragic murder of Jeanne Clery occurred in 1986. Her parents and family members put together this organization as an advocacy program in order to create new laws and change exiting ones to ensure the safety of college students in the United States.

One of the main goals that the Clery Center pushes for among colleges and universities is to be transparent with the public. They believe that releasing crime statistics to the public for colleges will allow them to be aware of common crimes in the area and keep more people safe in the end.

The Clery Act as well as the center are very powerful in speaking up for young college students and their safety needs that have been overlooked in the past.

The Clery Act is one of the main reasons so many colleges have security protocols and officers in place that we see so often today. If you want to learn more about them you can visit their website here. You can also listen to my podcast regarding the murder of Jeanne Clery that led to this organization here.
