A lot of you may be familiar with the popular show that came out on Netflix in early 2020 known as “Cheer”. This show follows the famous competitive cheerleading team from Navarro College.

The show was extremely popular when Netflix first aired it. It was one of the first shows that viewers thought was able to capture the real ups and downs of the competitive cheerleading world. The show was unscripted for the most part, and ended up winning three Emmys after being released.

However, just towards the end of April in this year, 2023, it came out that there was a lawsuit being pursued against the Navarro College cheerleading program and people were shocked to say the least.

This lawsuit accuses the entire cheerleading program, specifically the well-known head coach Monica Aldama, of covering up the sexual assault of one of their own cheerleaders.

This cheerleader that was allegedly sexually assaulted stated that this occurred at the hands of another male cheerleader on the team in her dorm room in September of 2021. This victim isn’t being publicly identified in the media at this time for privacy concerns, however; she has since left the Navarro cheerleading program altogether.

According to the cheerleader that was assaulted, she told multiple teammates about the assault looking for help and advice, and most of them advised her to forget about it and ignore it altogether.

It was also said that the head coach was made aware of these allegations and also chose to ignore them in an effort to keep up the credibility and appearance of the prestigious cheerleading team.

This all currently unfolding in the media as the active lawsuit moves forward, but a lot of people are very angry at the fact that these allegations weren’t taken more seriously and this girls cries for help were banality ignored by people she should’ve been able to trust.

If you have any thoughts on this situation, leave them in the comments down below! It will be interesting to see what happens next with this lawsuit, and I’m sure I can speak for most of us when I say I hope this girl gets the justice she deserves.
