Going to a PWI as a black student Samaya Cooper, April 11, 2023April 11, 2023 Being the only Black person in a class can be a unique and challenging experience. It can also offer valuable lessons for both me and the people in my class. below are some things that people can learn from someone being the only Black person in their class or just some things to be more aware of Diversity really matters. Having only one Black person in a class highlights the importance of diversity and how diverse the school itself is. It shows that there is a lack of representation and that efforts need to be made to ensure that people from all backgrounds are included. SUNY Fredonia is in charge of admissions and yet the percentage of white students will always be the dominant one. This experience can lead people to be more empathetic and understanding. For those who have never been the only black person in a class, this experience can help them develop empathy and understanding towards people who are different from them. It can teach them to appreciate the struggles that people from marginalized groups face and to be more compassionate towards them. This also means that one’s experiences are different from everyone else’s. This can lead to feelings of isolation, frustration, and even discrimination. It can also lead to opportunities for growth and resilience. People have to be aware of comments or even jokes that others may not find humorous or entertaining. The importance of representation is key when you are the only race different from the others in your class. Even in the workplace, you are representing your race at that moment. This can put a lot of pressure on someone, but it can also inspire them to be a positive role model for others. Personally, being the only Black person in my class was not really challenging, but for others it can be. The only thing I dislike about this is that I stand out. Of course one person with brown skin will stand out, and that can lead to me not feeling comfortable with talking to others in my class.
