When I was a younger child, I loved reading. I spent hours getting so lost in books that I would often miss the bus or get in trouble.
My love for reading was built from my parents and older siblings. Some children don’t get that love of reading though.
There is children that struggle with reading. When I was 16 I spent the summer trying to help an 8 year old boy strengthen his reading skills.
By no means am I a teacher. I do however believe that reading comprehension is an important skill to have.
I had older siblings so I would often read books that went above the level a child my age should’ve been reading.
There is kids who are reading under level though and sometimes they just need help.
In many schools they separate children in the class room when they have different reading levels. They make them read different books.
I believe it would make more sense if the children were kept together. Try to help them understand the books all together.
Separating children from their peers because they are struggling can be harmful and they will be more likely to not want to try.
Another thing that could help children develop their reading skills a little more is more activities to do so. When I was a child we were sat in front of the books and just told to do it.
If a child is struggling with reading they might need more encouragement and engagement. If they connect the reading to an activity they will be more likely to comprehend it.
Parent involvement is also very important. I understand that this can not always be available for some children.
If you do have the time though, sitting down with your child and reading with them will not only build their reading but can create a childhood memory they won’t forget.
