There is a love/hate relationship when it comes to screen adaptations of books. They can be good sometimes, but bad most of the time.
The issue with turning books into movies is that the movies aren’t long enough. There isn’t enough time to put the whole book into 2 hours.
I had a conversation the other day and the person told me “I wish that they would just make them into shows instead”. I completely agreed.
If we are going to get a screen version of our favorite books they should be television shows. Even if it is just one book it could be a limited series.
There would be enough time to tell the whole story of the book.
A book that worked well as a t.v. adaptation was ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’. This follows a teenage girl who finds herself in a situation with her life long best friends after they notice she becomes more attractive.
Each book is it’s own season. It allows for more details of the book to be given on screen.
This is different than say Harry Potter. Although the movies tend to be more viewed than the books they don’t give the books justice.
There is so many details missing from the books in these movies. Things like certain backgrounds of important characters
There is also the rare occasion when the movie was better than the book.
One situation of this is ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’. This book is about a girl who grew up in the marsh who was accused of murder.
The movie was amazing. It was interesting and you wanted to just keep watching.
After reading the book though, I was very disappointed and so were many others.
The book dragged on and was kind of boring. It was still good but it was hard to want to keep reading.
I do think that reading the books are important before watching the screen adaptation. When doing this though you will almost never be satisfied.
They are never exactly how you want them.
